The Job Itself - First Day Nerves - Social Care Jobs at Randstad Care

We all know that the first day at a new job is not always the most enjoyable.  In fact, according to research conducted by Pertemps, of the 500 jobseekers they surveyed, 72% suffered from acute first-day nerves. When asked to classify the extent of their fears, 46% felt it was more stressful than moving house.

So take some comfort in knowing that almost everyone at some point suffers from first day nerves.

Advice

For a contractor suffering from acute first-day nerves, the benefits of contract work such as working in different locations and meeting new people can often seem like a burden.

The following are some tips on how to change this negative into a positive:

  • When your consultant calls you with details of your next assignment, make a note of who you are to report to and your basic duties.  Bring this with you of your first day.
  • If unsure about the dress code, it is always better to be smart.
  • First–day impressions count so try to arrive 5-10 minutes early. Plan your route and allow extra time for any unexpected delays.
  • Make a note of the names of everyone you will be working with.
  • Introduce yourself to those working around you.  This is usually a good way to break the ice.
  • Find out what the office routine is, i.e. what time the post arrives and is collected.  This will help you to plan your day.
  • Find out where the fire exits are and other facilities such as toilets and kitchen.
  • When using a PC, make a note of your password/username so you don’t have to ask again.
  • Do not use packages or equipment such as Internet, email or telephone for personal use without permission.  If you find yourself with little to do, ask for more work. Proactive contractors are far more likely to be requested again.
  • If you are not happy where you are, speak to your consultant rather than leave without notice.  Your consultant will either try to find a solution to your problem or find you another position.

Remember, everyone at some point suffers from first day nerves, so you are not alone.  If you follow the points above your first day should sail by.  Don’t forget, your consultant is happy to discuss any issues you may have.  Happy contracting.
