A £136 million investment in Gwynedd's social housing upgrade has completed its first phase, Wales Online confirmed.

The new swathe of homes in Tregarth, Bangor, have been funded by an investment from social housing association, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd.

In a move described by the Daily Post North Wales as the largest of any kind in the region, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd will boost its current portfolio of 6,500 properties.

The additional investment will bring it up to the Welsh Government's housing quality standard (WHQS) by the end of 2015.

Ffrancon Williams, chief executive at CCG, hailed the steps taken by the association to help tenants: "This marks an important first step for us as our extensive investment programme gets well and truly under way."

"These improvements were part of our commitment to improve tenants' homes and to give the Gwynedd economy a well-needed boost as we spend £136m in our first five years," he added.

In addition, Williams noted that the investment will boost social housing jobs, construction work and other trades in the area.

He concluded: "Our WHQS programme means local jobs, and over 100 posts have already been created both directly at CCG and indirectly by our contractors and service providers. Since being set up in 2010, CCG has also awarded 36 contracts worth over £5m to local businesses."
