Water and tea just as beneficial

30 March 2011 - Deborah Bates

Drinking four to six cups of tea daily could be as beneficial as drinking a litre of water, those in dietitian jobs may be interested to learn.

That's according to a British clinical trial, which revealed drinking up to six cups of tea each day didn't have any sort of negative impact on a person's health.

HC2D.co.uk reported that the results came after 21 participants took part in the study, which saw half the group given a litre of water to drink over a 12-hour time period, and the other half given four 240ml cups of tea - which did not contain any sugar, just a little milk.

Researchers then studied that mount of exercise each group were able to after consuming the liquids, and measured their hydration levels on a regular basis.

After the culmination of their research, they found there were no "significant differences between drinking tea and water."

Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the results should please avid tea-drinkers who were previously concerned over the impact their habit may have had on their bodies.

One spokesperson for the Tea Advisory Panel, Dr Carrie Ruxton, spoke to The Daily Record about the results. She spoke of the other benefits that tea could bring: "In addition, tea is a rich source of flavonoids, which have been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease."
