Two-year-olds to be tested for learning problems

08 July 2011 - Joe Elvin

All two-year-olds who attend nursery school will soon be subjected to checks to identify learning problems.

The Government will announce plans to introduce the progress checks throughout Britain's nursery schools in order to try and improve parents engagement with their children's development.

According to The Daily Mail, ministers also plan to streamline the curriculum for nursery school children in order to increase the focus on key areas. The new curriculum will see the amount of goals pre-schoolers are expected to achieve reduced from 69 to 17.

The changes come after a government-commissioned review headed by Dame Clare Tickell suggested that nursery schools were currently too bureaucratic and repetitive. It is hoped that the changes will give anyone in a nursery nurse job more freedom to develop children as they see fit.

In an interview with Yahoo News!, Children's Minister Sarah Teather explained the reasoning behind the changes.

She said: "We know experiences in these first years have the biggest impact on how a child's brain develops. Fundamentally, it will make sure we are preparing our children for the challenges of school and beyond.

"This isn't just about making sure they can hold a pencil, children need the resilience, confidence and personal skills to be able to learn."
