Survey calls for more support for carers

14 June 2010 - Sarah Howard

According to a survey by Carers Week, a high proportion of carers are finding it difficult to have a life outside of their role, with 79 per cent of carers unable to partake in any out-of-work activities.

The survey, carried out in Northern Ireland mirrors Carers Wales studies, which found that many carers are feeling lonely and isolated. According to Wales Online, as many as 80 per cent of carers cannot rely on the support of other family members.

Such news has prompted health commentators to urge for more support for carers in the form of respite from those in domiciliary care jobs. With carers lessening the pressure on a health system expecting cuts - an estimated £87bn in savings - health charities believe that respite and support are vital tools in helping carers lead more fulfilling lives.

The Carers Week study discovered that many carers felt marginalised and unable to socialise in their old friend circles due to the financial, physical and emotional stresses of their role. According to the BBC, some even felt that they couldn't pursue a relationship or have children as their role as a carer was simply too demanding.

Ex Strictly Come Dancing Judge, Arlene Phillips is putting her backing behind the survey, commenting in Wales Online: ''I helped look after my Father when he was suffering from dementia, so I know what a strain it can be, both physically and emotionally. You can feel so alone and isolated.''
