Summer worsens obesity crisis

04 July 2011 - Deborah Bates

Those in dietitian jobs may have more work than usual on their hands in the coming months, as during summer months, Britain's obesity crisis is set to worsen.

That's because of the rising number of Brits who like to host a barbecue in their back garden, Topix.com revealed.

According to statistics released by Woolworths.co.uk, people can take in some 2,000 calories just from one sitting at a summer barbie. It found that typically, a man attending a barbecue will eat "two sausages, two burgers, two ribs, one-and-a-half chicken legs, two kebabs, and one-and-a-half jacket potatoes."

Furthermore, ladies can put away "two sausages, two burgers, a rib, a chicken leg, one kebab and a jacket potato."

By doing this, people push the boundaries of their nutritional limits and potentially put on a lot more weight than they might think. Women could be consuming 30 more calories than their recommended intake, as well as one ounce more fat.

Although most nutritionists' advice would be to avoid the barbie, one dietitian, Jayne Wilson, recognised this wasn't perhaps a realistic feat.

She told Mail Online: "Summer is a good time to change eating habits but this doesn't mean you can't still enjoy a barbecue.

"Fish, chicken, seafood or turkey marinated in plain yoghurt, herbs, spices or chill are great alternatives to burgers and sausages or sugar-laden marinades."
