There could soon be an influx of nurse manager jobs for those experienced in diabetes care, after it was revealed that specialist nurses could improve the quality of care given to diabetes sufferers.

As reported by The Press Association, the input from specialist services could improve patients' experiences, increase safety standards and help ensure that money for care is used effectively, claims the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD).

Louise Meakes, senior specialist diabetes nurse at Buckinghamshire Hospitals - which has implemented a flagship scheme - said: "By specialising in diabetes, we have a unique insight into the ways services are provided and how they can be developed. The changes we have introduced to our inpatient intervention service have made such a difference to the ways in which our patients are cared for."

The flagship scheme, which was launched by Portsmouth Hospitals Trust, was hailed a success earlier this year by the NHS' South Central Health and Social Care awards.

The scheme reviews all patients with diabetes each day to improve outcomes, which has resulted in shorter hospital stays, fewer patients needing re-admission and a lower incidence of hospital associated infections.

These innovative systems were highlighted by the ABCD as glowing examples of how diabetes care can be drastically improved when led by a specialist team.
