Social workers show support for under-pressure police

10 August 2011 - Paul Smithson

A number of professionals in social care jobs have voiced their support for the police force, despite having to put some of their own work on hold while the riots are dealt with.

Gill Robinson, an approved mental health professional (AMHP), told Community Care that there have been instances over the past few days in which assessments have had to be postponed as policemen have not been available to attend.

She told the news provider: "The police's everyday business is having to be put to one side while their focus is pulled elsewhere. Sometimes we underestimate what the police are doing on an everyday basis and how much we rely on them."

Ms Robinson explained that she may have to wait until the riots are over before she can clear the backlog of work that is mounting up, particularly since local Magistrates' Courts - which normally issue warrants for social workers - are also under pressure.

Speaking to the same news provider, AMHP spokesperson for the College of Social Work Steve Chamberlain said it looks like being at least two days until they can get police support, but he understands the pressure they are under.

BBC News reported Prime Minister David Cameron as saying that the fightback against the riots has started, highlighting how the police now have the legal backing to use any tactics necessary to bring the situation under control.

The politician stressed there will be consequences for anyone involved.
