Social workers say children's safety is risked by limits of their jobs

07 October 2010 - Laura Nineham

People in social care jobs don't have the time to make well-founded decisions about the safety of children, which increases the danger that children could suffer from abuse and neglect, according to new research.

As reported by The Guardian, the British Association of Social Workers' (BASW) survey found that 70% of people admitted having been unable to protect a child because of the constraints on their job.

The research suggests that authorities might soon be advertising social care jobs in a bid to relieve the over stretching of resources.

A shocking 95% of social workers said that the increased pressure mean the health and safety of children was at risk because social workers were being forced to make decisions that are based on insufficient information.

"These findings confirm our worst suspicions about the challenges facing social workers in protecting vulnerable people from hard," explained Nushra Manusir, professional officer at the BASW.

"Protection services are already stripped to the bone. Demand for social services continues to rise, resources continue to diminish and if the government can't protect frontline services then I dread to think what will happen to society."

The research also revealed that the number of children referred to social workers because of suspected neglect or abuse has grown by 52% in three years.
