Social workers need to be qualified to excel professionalism

19 November 2009

Graduates who are looking to get a job in the socal care sector may need to study further, according to the Independent. The paper claimed that those who don't take an undergraduate degree within social work, will need to have a two year postgraduate course in a similar subject to ensure that the most qualified people can become social workers.

Steve McCormack from the Independent said: "Entry to the profession requires a degree in social work or two years' postgraduate qualification. Either way, your study will include at least 200 days of assessed practice in social work settings."

Though it is still more than possible to become a social worker as there is a major need for them. Bursaries of up to £5,000 to help finance courses are available, and graduate jobs in social care offer starting salaries of around £18,000 up to £30,000 the longer your career progresses.

Dr Mary Dengler is the deputy director of the MSc course in sustainability and management at the University of London. She told the Independent that businesses are increasingly looking for people to take up roles in their corporate social responsibiliy sections.

A large amount of legislation is on track to modernise social care. The Government is ending its public consultation on the shape and funding of social care ahead of a White Paper expected in 2010 and social work professionals are calling for the legislation sooner rather than later in order to guarantee control for disabled people over their own quaility of living.
