Social networking campaign to support social housing in Portsmouth

02 February 2011 - Laura Nineham

Those with social housing jobs in Portsmouth have been supporting a social media campaign that aims to raise opposition to a proposed measure which could slash the amount of shared housing available in the city.

According to Property Talk Live, the social media campaign called Save Housing in Portsmouth is utilising Facebook and Twitter in a bid to encourage people to write to their MP and highlight how proposals will affect those living in the area.

It was launched by the National Landlords Association, who says the proposed 'Article 4 designation' in Portsmouth would reduce the amount of social housing available.

"Unfortunately Portsmouth, like other cities across the country, has a lack of good quality affordable housing," said David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA. "The proposed Article 4 designation will ensure it has even less. Aside from the obvious impact this will have on local landlords, these plans will be devastating for the many people who have little option other than to rely on shared housing."

The concerns were echoed by the NLA's local representative for Hampshire. Ken Staunton added: "I fear that if the proposed Article 4 designation in Portsmouth goes through, it will make it impossible for local landlords like myself to provide more homes for sharers, students and people on low incomes."
