Social housing project in central London

05 February 2010

Residents on the social housing waiting list are reported by the Kiburn Times to be 'happy' after Camden Council has given the green light for funds to be used to back an affordable housing scheme in a fashionable and expensive area of London.

These additional funds will be used to support a social housing project at 146 - 162 Kilburn High Road and will provide over fifty affordable housing units. Camden Council will be giving £960,000 from its Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) to Origin Housing Association who are delivering the project.

Councillor James King of the Kilburn ward, stated ''The council are now in a position to provide vital financial support to the development to ensure it is delivered and it will be 100 per cent social housing.''

This statement gave hope to those seeking affordable housing in the UK's most expensive city and indeed those seeking social housing jobs or public sector housing jobs - whose skills will be required on the project.

The Origin project had originally obtained planning permission and funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to build 20 homes and 32 private units. However, the private units were rejected after the project suffered from financial difficulties. This prompted the housing association to seek help from the council, who stipulated that the affordable housing scheme must run across all units built.

The development will also seek to boost the economics of the area, with shops set to open when the scheme is completed, increasing visitors and spenders to Kiburn High Road.

A spokeswoman from Camden Council was positive about the scheme, saying ''This is excellent news for Camden as it means more social and intermediate housing will become available.''
