Social housing estate to be redeveloped

15 June 2011 - Ashley Curtis

Plans to rebuild one of Doncaster's notorious social housing estates has been given the go-ahead, reports The Star.

Doncaster Council's Cabinet has approved plans to renovate the Edlington area, a former magnet for vandals and arsonists until the boarded-up terrace houses were torn down. The area was also blighted by anti-social behaviour and generally poor housing.

176 new homes will be built of which 90 houses are for private sale, 52 two-bedroom apartments are for adults with extra care needs and 34 two-bed bungalows have been assigned for adults with extra-care needs.

Of the 86 homes for those with care needs, which may need those in housing management jobs to look after them, 49 will be for social rent and supported by housing benefit, 17 for shared ownership and 20 will be for private sale, cites 24dash.com.

Builders are expected to start work on the site next February or March with completion of the extra care apartments and bungalows within three years. The private homes are expected to be completed within five years.

Councillor Ray Mullis, cabinet member for housing and Edlington ward member, expressed his delight at the proposals: "This is tremendous news for the people of Edlington and I am delighted to see the regeneration of the town moving forwards.

"Both the Mayor and myself are really pleased that after some intensive work to bring this site forward that we can now realise our commitment to the people of Edlington that this site will finally be redeveloped."
