Sleep apnoea could be improved by low-energy foods

03 June 2011 - Deborah Bates

Sufferers of sleep apnoea could find their condition improved by eating a low-energy diet and reducing their weight, those in dietitian jobs might be interested to hear.

That's according to a recent study from BMJ.com, which found that the symptoms of a test group were improved by eating a diet low in energy, and sticking to a steady weight loss or maintenance regime.

Although the conclusion was based on a test group of men, these findings could really help other sufferers in the same position.

Some seven academics were responsible for the revelation, including Martin Neuvius, Ylva Trolle Lagerros, Erik Hemmingsson, Kari Johansson, Richard Harlid, Fredrik Granath and Stephan Rossner.

The researchers all confirmed the findings in their abstract, claiming: "Initial improvements in obstructive sleep apnoea after treatment with a very low energy diet can be maintained after one year in obese men with moderate to severe disease."

By publicising these findings, the seven academics could really help the 60 to 70 per cent of obese people that suffer apnoea. According to Barchester.com, apnoea causes "abnormal pauses" during the sleep pattern. Those who have the condition often feel tired in the mornings and face "premature death" and a "decreased quality of life."
