Scientific proof that organic food is better for health

11 July 2011 - Deborah Bates

An expert has confirmed that regardless of what many say, organic food does actually carry more health benefits that its non-organic counterpart.

Speaking to Smh.au, naturopath Amanda Haberecht revealed that: "The soils used for organic farming are more nutritionally replete than conventional soils."

Her comments came as part of Smh.au's attempt to confirm or debunk many of the myths surrounding food. It claimed that many consumers are left confused by the constant contradictions amongst health professionals regarding good groups.

As such, it outlined some of the facts and myths that float around the world - such as the widespread theory that taking in dairy is the best way to boost calcium levels. Professionals in dietitian jobs might be interested to hear that this isn't actually true.

Haberecht confirmed: "This is because such a high proportion of the Caucasian population are lactose intolerant, and all of us have degrees of lactose intolerance that stop us from absorbing the calcium in milk.

"Goat's milk contains more calcium than cow's milk and we tolerate it better because it's closer, chemically, to human milk."

Furthermore, the health expert revealed Stuff.co.nz that contrary to popular belief, low-fat foods aren't always the best weight-loss solution; and that vegetables that are overcooked do in fact lose part of their nutritional value.

"When you cook your green vegetables until they go that olive-green colour, you have lost some of the nutrients," she concluded.
