Safe staffing standards needed, says expert

20 May 2011 - Ashley Curtis

No nurse staffing level in various wards and trusts should go below a certain unmanageable level, reports Nursing Times.

That's according to Dr Heather Wood, a former Care Quality Commission (CQC) investigator, who rose her concerns with the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust public inquiry.

She noted that a trust can achieve a "good" rating in the commissions quality monitoring system - the annual health check - despite having unsafe staffing levels.

Dr Wood recommends that those in nurse manager jobs and other positions of NHS authority should lobby to regulators, stating that the employment more staff could help regulate levels. She also noted that regulators "could have come up with some standard relating to staffing."

She told the inquiry: "The profession of nursing has battled with this issue for some time because it's likely that in any area the actual dependency of patients who are admitted will vary. Having said that there are limits below which trusts should not go."

The Royal College of Nursing agreed a motion supporting legally enforceable staffing level at its annual congress in Liverpool in April.

The call for a regulated level of nurses comes as current NHS trusts and institutions celebrated their present roster, with nurses at Coventry and Warwickshire celebrated for their hard work, reports Coventry Telegraph.

A conference, aiming to celebrate all the hard work nurses have put into the industry, was held at University Hospital on International Nurses Day last week, which celebrates the profession on the birthday of history's most famous nurse.
