Public oblivious to spare tyre health risk

23 April 2010 - Sarah Howard

Health experts warn that too many people in the UK are unaware of the dangers that carrying excess weight around the middle can carry.

This weight dubbed a ''spare tyre'' can increase an individual's risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. BBC news reports that carrying too much weight around the middle creates oestrogen and raises the levels of stomach chemicals, putting individuals at an increased risk of developing serious illness.

A survey of over 2000 members of the British public showed that 97 per cent did not know or understand the dangers associated with a spare tyre. Out of the respondents, 71 per cent admitted that they had a growing waistline.

The research was conducted by the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK, aiming to increase awareness of the effects of gaining weight and promote healthier lifestyles. In collaboration, the organisations are to launch an Active Fat campaign to combat the lack of understanding.

The campaign is to encourage people to engage in exercise and healthy eating, under the guidance of those in dietitian jobs.

Dr Mike Knapton, director for prevention and care at the British Heart Foundation, commented on the joint scheme, saying: ''That 'harmless' spare tyre around your waist is actually a health hazard. While you might be relaxing at home, your fat cells are working overtime to pump out excess hormones and other chemicals that can cause disease.''

''Wrapping a tape measure around your middle takes just a few seconds, but it could be your vital first step towards a healthier future.''
