Patients to refer themselves for physio

26 July 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

A new system which allows patients with musculoskeletal problems to refer themselves for physiotherapy, has been launched in Scotland.

The scheme has been introduced in an effort to speed up patients access to treatment. The health board project means patients in the East Lothian and Midlothian area, can bypass appointments with their GP and instead book themselves an appointment with a physiotherapist, by filling out a form.

NHS Lothian hope the system will result in those needing treatment gaining quicker access to the care and support they need. Tests have shown that the sooner a patient with such injuries is treated, the more likely it is that their treatment will be a success.

Morag Barrow, allied health professional manager for East Lothian and Midlothian told The Scotsman: "Patients can still go their GP, but this method of referral will add to our menu of options to access the physiotherapy service.

"This new service will improve access for patients, as well as free up time in GP surgeries," she added.

The system will mean those working in physiotherapy jobs will be in high demand, but NHS Lothian do not think it will put unnecessary pressure on the professionals. The service will ensure patients get seen more quickly, which will reduce the chances of their injury developing into a more persistent problem.

"People will be seen more quickly. The longer the time between a musculoskeletal injury and receiving specialist advice, then the more likely that a problem will turn into a chronic one," she added.
