Every palliative care patient could be assigned their own individual nurse to "help them navigate to a dignified death."

Tom Hughes-Hallett, who is the chair of the Palliative Care Funding Review, suggested that this would be a key recommendation featured in the paper when it is released this July.

Research by Hughes-Hallett and his team has suggested that some palliative care patients are having to co-ordinate their own end of life care.

It is thought this would be less likely if those in nurse manager jobs were to assign individual care to each patient nearing the end of their lives.

Speaking to Nursing Times, Mr Hughes-Hallett added that we can expect to see better assessments of those in palliative care.

He said: "It is likely that [one of the two] core recommendations that will be in the review we publish before the summer, will be that every patient, every family, should have a proper assessment of their needs.''

"The second recommendation that's almost certainly going to be there is that every patient and family should have a case worker assigned to them."

Mr. Hughes-Hallett, who is chief executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care, was asked to chair the review by the secretary of state last July.

According to dh.gov.uk, its aim is to try and improve how money is spent on those who are approaching the end of life.
