One in five young carers find the festive period difficult

13 December 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

Some young carers struggle to cope when caring for ill or disabled loved ones during the Christmas period, new research has found.

The research carried out by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers found that one in five young people find the festive period more difficult than the rest of the year, because most support services offer a reduced service.

The survey questioned 117 carers aged between five and 18 and results indicated that more than a third would be carrying out duties similar to those done by those working in social care jobs, for their relatives on Christmas day.

Carole Cochrane chief executive of The Princess Royal Trust for carers said: "It is heart-breaking to see how many young carers will struggle this Christmas. Many of the young carers we surveyed wished for their family member to get better rather than for the latest toy. Sadly for them Christmas is just like any other day."

In response to survey findings, the trust has launched a Christmas appeal in an effort to help young carers. The trust is urging young people in need of help and support over the Christmas period to visit their website.

One 14 year who responded to the survey, told Children and Young People Nows: "I care for my mum who has multiple sclerosis and has to use a wheelchair. She's in pain and shakes a lot so I wrap presents and cook the Christmas dinner for her and my little brother. I want to make the day special for them but it's tough."

"Last year I was in tears by the end of Christmas and I just want this year to be different," she added.
