One-fifth of adult Brits consume no solids as part of their breakfast, according to recent findings from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

According to Diet.co.uk, one-third of adults do opt for a bowl of cereal, whilst 45 per cent leave the cereal and go for something else - such as toast.

However the most worrying fact was that 20 per cent weren't having any solids in the morning, which could leave them without the proper mix of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates they need to perform efficiently.

The news may prompt more professionals working in dietitian jobs to further enforce the idea that having a well-balanced breakfast helps set people up for the day ahead; and also to mirror the advice that a healthy bowl of cereal with milk could be the perfect breakfast, as it offers a good mix of calcium, fibre, carbs and protein.

HealthyDietTips.net reported that in order to collate the survey's findings, 12,068 people aged 19 to 64 were asked to respond with their regular morning eating habits.

Whilst food was discussed, the drinking habits of respondents were also analysed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the results found that 84 per cent of UK residents had a tea or coffee in the morning - regardless of what they had food-wise for breakfast.
