Olympic anti-doping staff on hunt for nurses

28 June 2011 - Joe Elvin

Nurses are being sought out to play a key role in the London Olympics next year.

There are ten positions available for phlebotomists to take part in the anti-doping process for all events taking place outside of the capital such as football, sailing and rowing.

UK Anti-Doping, who is in charge of all drug tests during the games, may also use their recruits to assist with future sporting events such as Premiership football matches and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

There will not be a minimum amount of work specified so the role might be better suited to those in nurse manager jobs who want to earn some extra money alongside their current role.

Phlebotomy.org reveal that there are many voluntary medical roles being sought out by Olympic staff as well.

UK Anti-Doping Director of Operations Nicole Sapstead explained to Nursing Times why nurses were perfect for the role in question.

She said: "Blood collection officers need to be able to collect blood from an individual who may be incredibly anxious, who may have a phobia of needles or is prone to fainting.

"Nurses have those skills, and the confidence to deal with those situations. It's about keeping high-profile people happy and trying to promote clean sport."
