Nursing Times asks nurses to vote on Hall of Fame candidates

11 February 2010

The Nursing Times has invited all of those in the field of nursing to take part in a poll which will choose the next inductee into their Nursing Hall of Fame.

Readers of the website are invited to choose between two people who have been exceptional in both general nursing and specifically during their time in nurse manager jobs. Readers can vote via a poll hosted on the site.

The first candidate is Louise Boden, the chief nurse at the University College London Hospitals foundation trust. Boden is also a member of the Task Force convened to address concerns around the leadership and quality of care at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals foundation trust by Monitor, the national independent regulator of NHS foundation trusts.

She is also an honory visiting professor at both City and London South Bank Universities and a governor at the Chalfont centre for Epilepsy. In 2003, she was awarded an OBE for 'services to nursing'. Nursing Times credits Boden with developing the careers of chief nurses at NHS trusts around the country.

The second candidate is Kathy George, the former director of the army nursing services and as the most senior officer in the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, the 'matron in chief'. Mrs George has attained the rank of Colonel during her 26 year military career and was reportedly one of the first matrons of a field hospital in the first gulf war.

She helped set up Selly Oak Hospital as the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, establishing one of the UK's highest profile hospitals for military personnel. She is also the immediate past CE and registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Nursing Times praises her experience and leadership for bringing financial stability to the organisation. In 2005, she was awarded a CBE for her contribution to military nursing and she has also received the Royal Red Cross.
