Nurses helped on to the property ladder

25 August 2011 - Elizabeth Smythe

A joint venture between a house builder, the NHS and two credit unions is allowing healthcare workers in Scotland to climb onto the property ladder with "little or no deposit," What Homes? reports.

Unique Property Solutions, a conglomerate comprising NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Credit Union, Glasgow Credit Union and Cruden Homes West, sets up affordable mortgages and assists in finding home deposits, those with social housing and nurse manager jobs may be interested to learn.

The scheme has been created to "tackle the issue of affordable housing head on," according to cruden-ltd.co.uk, offering 20 per cent deposit funding loans and up to 95 per cent mortgages for first time buyers

It is being used especially by hospital workers who are in the process of being relocated to the currently under-construction South Glasgow Hospital.

Paediatric nurse, Hannah Buist is just one of the medical professionals who has taken advantage of the scheme, moving into a one bedroom flat with her partner.

She said: "Despite having very little deposit, we were able to secure a 90 per cent mortgage. Our apartment is beautiful and what's more, the funding package has finally made it affordable for us with a favourable interest rate.

"To top it all off, the apartment is situated across form the tube station which means I can easily get to work now. When I move to the new children's hospital on the South Glasgow Hospital campus, I can walk to work every day."

The scheme is proving popular, as Ian Reid, director of HR for Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS explained: "We work hard to support staff if their work base changes and this unique service is a superb opportunity for them to obtain funding to make their house move a reality."
