Nurses asked to consider becoming more flexible with roles to ensure job security

15 December 2009

A new deal which may offer nurses job security, in return for flexibility over job roles and accepting a cap on pay rises, has been announced.

Unions and senior nurses have said that nursing staff must accept a pay rise of no more than one per cent from 2011 if their jobs are to be protected.

It's thought that nursing staff, including those in nurse manager jobs, will demand that staff are given suitable training to embrace their potential new roles.

This job guarantee was outlined in the NHS' five year strategy From Good to Great: preventative, people-centred and productive, which was launched by health secretary Andy Burnham last week.

He said this strategy will help avoid making redundancies in nursing jobs: “The improvements in the last decade have been made by NHS staff. It is vital to protect frontline staff in order to deliver services to patients... We are proud of the achievements of NHS staff and we will do everything we can to support them through the next period of change. We were in a situation a few years ago in the NHS where people had financial pressure and lots of redundancies were announced. I do not think we need to get into that position.”

The strategy also laid out plans for the Department of Health to work with NHS Employers and trade unions to “explore the pros and cons of offering frontline staff an employment guarantee locally or regionally in return for flexibility, mobility and sustained pay restraint”.

These new changes will offer nurses the opportunity to expand their skill set by taking on different roles and gaining a wider experience of nursing, whilst guaranteeing their jobs at the moment.
