Nursery staff in Glasgow asked to point out behavioural problems

09 August 2011 - Joe Elvin

Nursery staff in Glasgow have been asked to evaluate whether their children are showing signs of becoming a bully.

A new assessment form, filled out by everyone with a nursery nurse job in Glasgow, has asked whether their children lie, steal or bully other children.

The forms called SDQs will be handed to primary school teachers in an effort to stamp out any anti-social behaviour at the children's school.

Professor Robert Goodman, who created the forms, was keen to highlight the benefits of assessing any possible behavioural problems at an early age.

In an interview with The Daily Record, he encouraged parents of toddlers in Glasgow to access the forms in order to deal with any possible behavioural problems that their children may be forming.

He said: "This lets parents report difficulties so they can be picked up and dealt with as soon as possible. There is so much inequality. The point is to try and identify problems so they can be solved earlier in life rather than later."

The move to detect potential bullies at such a young age could be in response to the growth of 'cyber-bullying' taking place amongst older generations. This is much harder for teachers or parents to spot.

The Daily Telegraph report that instances of bullying via mobile phones and social networking websites have dramatically increased as their use has become more popular.
