Nurse-patient "comfort" checks improve care

21 July 2011 - Ashley Curtis

Nurses making regular rounds to check on patients' comfort are helping to reduce injuries and improve care at hospitals across the UK.

That's according to Julie Hendry, a director of nursing at Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust, who introduced the scheme.

Those in nurse manager jobs should be directing their staff to attend to the patients' every need with these questions, quoted from Nursing Times: "Are you in pain? Are you comfortable? Can I help you change your position? Can I take you to the toilet? Can I get you a drink? Is there anything else?"

These questions aren't random - they were formulated based on the most common complaints from patients in care.

In addition, studies have shown that regular patient checks can "reduce the use of call buzzers and pressure ulcers, as well as increasing patient satisfaction."

This isn't the first look into improving patient care in hospitals around the UK. Thanks to reports on "dignity and care" from the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust - as well as a report from the Health Ombudsman on patient complaints - a commission has been launched on how to improve the dignity of older patients.

Sir Keith Pearson, chairman of the NHS confederation, stated that schemes like Hendry's nurse rounds are helpful to the NHS: "It should not be an option for any part of the service to provide anything but the highest standards of dignity and care to its patients. Getting it right for every patient, every time is a big challenge, but it can be done."
