The seasonal flu jab has seen four times as many injections for nurses this winter compared to last year, reports bioportfolio.com.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust delivered the vaccination to almost two-thirds (59 per cent) of qualified nurses this winter, compared to 14 per cent the previous year.

The trusts took additional measures in order to deliver the jab including training extra staff to vaccinate colleagues and getting the Hospital at Night teams to inject staff working out-of-hours.

This will provide relief for those in nurse manager jobs, knowing that their staff have had the jab which makes them immune to certain strains of the flu. This will enable them to deliver the highest quality care with a lower risk of contracting the illness which can cause headaches, fever, a runny nose and aching limbs.

Carole Hunter, the trust's head of occupational health services, said to nursingtimes.net: "We were pretty much 24/7 with the vaccinations. As well as the static clinics we had occupational health nurses walking our sites to provide the vaccination."

Ms Hunter also noted that the trust have been planning the vaccinations from as early as June in order to increase the uptake.

Latest Department of Health figures show 26% of frontline NHS staff received the seasonal vaccine this winter, prompting DH head of immunisation Professor David Salisbury "to call for a culture change among healthcare staff towards vaccination."
