In an unlikely switch, those in nurse manager jobs have donned aprons and made tea for their hard-working staff on Nurse's Day.

The Nursing Times reported that managers in the Hull and East Riding area switched on the kettle and helped nurses to a cup of tea in celebration of the tremendous work they do all year round.

Furthermore, the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust celebrated the day by unveiling the winning design for its new nursing and midwifery badge.

Other institutions, such as the Norfolk Community Health and Care Trust, commemorated the day by highlighting stories about some of its 900-plus nurses. One of the stories included a tale about modern matron John Mallett, who is part of a number of generations in his family involved in nursing - including his wife, brother and both parents.

Lynda Whincup, deputy director of services and professions at Hull and East Riding, hailed the work of NHS nurses, stating: "Our nurses are at the forefront of delivery of care for patients, clients and families, and we feel it's really important to recognise this."

The celebrations prompted a call from Nick Clegg in the Daily Mail that stated nurses should have a bigger say in how the NHS is run under the new controversial reforms.
