The Liberal Conservative coalition government has announced its plans to revamp the NHS in a move to improve the performance of the service as a whole.

Launching a new policy proposal document, the government pledges to empower the public to choose their own GP, as well as setting aside funds for specialist cancer drugs and the appointment of an independently run agency to supervise the effectiveness of the NHS.

The document is effectively a combining of both Conservative and Liberal Democrat policy, according to the BBC, providing advice to management professionals such as nurse managers on the Conservative front and giving people greater freedom of choice on the Lib Dem side of matters.

Other promises include cutting the cost of NHS administration, providing more money for front line professionals such as those in nursing, radiography and social care jobs. In line with these changes, the government has stated that those in such roles will be given more freedom, redistributing power from ''centrally dictated'' management services.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, commented to the BBC regarding the document, saying: ''This document sets out a clear message to the NHS - that our united vision is for a healthcare system which achieves outcomes that are amongst the best in the world and free from day to day political interference.''
