NHS Future Forum "recommended significant changes"

13 June 2011 - Deborah Bates

The NHS Future Forum will release an "independent review" of the government's proposed NHS reforms today, which is expected to "recommend significant changes" to the reforms.

According to Newssniffer.co.uk, the forum will make the suggestions after taking a two-month consultation period - in which it analysed the reforms proposed by prime minister David Cameron and his deputy, Nick Clegg.

Reports have speculated that the government will release a "detailed response" to the forum's review on Tuesday. Although this hasn't been confirmed, those in nurse manager jobs and working in other parts of the NHS may be waiting with baited breath to hear what both the government and the forum has to say on the NHS' future.

Speculation has also been rife over what topics the forum's review will focus on, with some claiming "controversial issues" like "the speed of change" and "competition" amongst GPs and primary care trusts (PCTs) would be top of the agenda.

Furthermore, the forum's "fears" over the government's plans to overhaul "a system already under huge financial pressure" could be raised in the report.

However regardless of which concerns are raised, the NHS Confederation's chief executive, Mike Farrar, has said transparency is the only thing sought by the NHS. He confirmed on BBC.co.uk: "The government must now the the NHS some clarity, and enable it to focus on the major problems it faces, such as financial pressure and the variability of care.

"It is essential that those responsible for taking key decisions are able to do so with confidence and certainty."
