New website causes controversy in public sector

11 December 2009

A website going live today is causing controversy over its accuracy among public services. The site exposes the quality of public services in the UK, from children's welfare, teaching, crime fighting and council recycling.

The website, 'Oneplace' is a collaboration involving six independent inspectorates and is intended to provide a consumer guide to the performance of local authorities, NHS primary care trusts, schools, police forces, prisons and probation services.

It reveals reports on the overall performance of councils in England, the assessments made by the Audit Commission, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, and the inspectorates of constabulary, probation and prisons. It also shows the ratings for children's services highlighting the best and worst.

The Conservative party said it would get rid of the area assessments developed by the Audit Commission, which form the majority of these new published ratings.

Edward Lister, the Conservative leader of Wandsworth council disagrees with the results found and told the Local Government Chronicle: "This new regime is too bland and too superficial to provide any meaningful insights. In attempting to cover just about every aspect of public life in the area, the reports simply descend into generalities. Despite the huge effort in cost and time, there is nothing here that provides any added value for our taxpayers. We are not going to waste another year propping up such a wasteful and poorly directed system."

Cynthia Bower, chief executive of the Care Quality Commission believes the site will help those in social care and other services, to see where they are going wrong and therefore fix it. She said: "Getting public agencies working together effectively is absolutely central to the provision of good health and social care. The findings from this work bring this issue sharply into focus."
