New social housing mobility scheme in London

25 May 2011 - Joe Elvin

Social housing residents in London will soon find it much easier to move across the capital.

15 housing associations in the capital have agreed to dedicate 5 per cent of their properties to those who need to relocate, as part of a new housing mobility scheme.

Whilst the scheme is being piloted, only residents who need to move due to a change in employment will qualify to take part in the scheme.

However, if the scheme is a success, it could also be adopted for residents who feel the need to downsize or relocate for health reasons.

London24.com reports that London and Thames Gateway are the two regions which have been selected to pilot the project.

Those who have social housing jobs within the 'G15' have promised they will strive to make living terms for tenants as similar to their previous accommodation as possible.

Speaking to southernhousinggroup.co.uk, National Housing Federation chief executive David Orr said: "Tasked with giving Londoners greater mobility and control over where they work, this G15-led group has really thought on its feet.

"The 'G15 London Moves' project will be widely watched by both politicians and housing professionals as it rightly aims to show that housing can be a springboard as well as a safety net."
