New social housing jobs if plans for derelict mill are approved

06 October 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

Plans to convert a former mill into affordable housing, have been recommended for approval.

The site of the former British Trimmings factory, in Ball Haye Road Staffordshire would be transformed into 60 two-bedroom and 27 one bedroom flats which would provide accommodation specifically for those over 55 years old.

The Moorlands Housing scheme said if the planning application is accepted by the council, somewhere between 30 and 35 full time social housing jobs would be created. The social landlords proposition consists of plans to build a three storey building on the site and to provide a community facility for residents.

Community facilities outlined in the plans include a restaurant, health and beauty suite as well as a treatment room which would be used for massage and aromatherapy.

The development would also have internet access, a library and hobby room which is expected to be used for classes and meetings. It is expected that the new facility would be open to the public between 8.30am and 7pm, seven days a week. A decision is expected to be made by members of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council's planning application committee this week.

However, neighbours of the site have written two letters raising concern that developing the derelict site would be over-intensive and intrusive. The letters also claimed that parking at the facility would be inadequate.

According to This is Staffordshire, a report to councillors said: "Officers conclude that the benefit of this development, in particular the provision of affordable housing, serve to outweigh concerns about the loss of an existing employment site. The principle of development is, therefore, considered to be acceptable."
