New residential mental facility gets go-ahead

18 July 2011 - Elizabeth Smythe

Permission for a new landmark mental health facility in Northampton has been granted.

A planning committee has approved West Northamptonshire Development Corporation's (WNDC) proposals for the construction of a new state-of-the-art centre which will accommodate 180 patients, those looking for residential support worker jobs may be interested to learn.

The new centre will treat people with a range of psychiatric conditions in facilities which include four interlinked buildings which comprise bedrooms, therapy rooms and offices.

Led by St Andrew's Healthcare, the £50 million scheme will also create about 260 jobs, according to About My Area.

The 285,000 square feet building will be situated on the site of the former Cliftonville Middle School, next to an existing 130-bed mental health centre, William Wake House.

Using 18th Century architectural style, the new centre has been designed in keeping with existing historic buildings on the site.

Commenting on the announcement, Professor Philip Sugarman, chief executive of St Andrew's Healthcare, said: "It is our ambition to provide mental healthcare facilities and services that are second to none, both regionally and nationally.

"Approval of outline planning permission to enhance what we can provide at our Northampton site is another step towards that goal. We can now start our detailed work on our future plans for the site."
