New housing scheme allows elderly people to remain independent

21 July 2011 - Joe Elvin

A new £12 million housing development for elderly people in Portsmouth has been completed.

The development, which consists of 65 homes designed with the needs of elderly residents in mind, is already proving to be a success as many elderly people have taken the opportunity to snap up a property on a shared-ownership basis.

In fact, housing21.co.uk reports that Portsmouth City Council have already given the thumbs up for a further 180 units to be built throughout the city.

There houses were built with the aim of encouraging elderly people to continue living independently for as long as they possibly can. However there are many professionals working in domiciliary care jobs based nearby the properties for residents who still require assistance with day-to-day tasks.

Tayo Bilewu, who is director for the properties' developers, Housing 21, was pleased that the houses were proving to be such a hit with the vulnerable people of Portsmouth

Speaking to build.co.uk, he said: "Together with Portsmouth City Council we're treating environments that enable people to achieve a good quality later life by allowing to live independently with help on hand. This is why extra care is an increasingly popular choice."

The 180 new properties will be spread across three different areas of the city, which have yet to be confirmed.
