New health centre is a step nearer

04 January 2011 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

A new state of the art health centre in Birmingham is one step closer to becoming a reality, after lease agreements were signed at the proposed site.

If the proposed work goes to plan, the doors to the £4 million Balsall Common complex will open at the beginning of 2012. The new facility is set to revamp out of date and cramped GP surgeries and will bring eight doctors under the one roof, the Birmingham Mail reports.

Patients at the centre will benefit from the latest NHS facilities, with services including a new dental clinic and pharmacy. When the centre opens there will be a boost in recruitment for those in physiotherapy jobs as the centre will also hold physiotherapy and chiropody clinics. Solihull NHS Care Trust and doctors from Balsall Common and Meriden Group Practice have already signed up for space at the health centre.

Richard Whitehouse head of estates for Solihull Care Trust said: "The engagement and strong support of local community representatives and the unbreakable commitment of the practice to secure for their patients the best modern facilities for an extended range of health services has paid off with the commitments now in place."

The centre will also boast family planning facilities, a diabetes clinic, antenatal and postnatal clinics, district nursing and offer speech and language therapy. Joanne Hope Balsall Common and Meriden group practice manager added: "We are delighted to reach agreement for the lease of this exciting new development that will benefit our patients in so many ways."
