A £4m centre in Wrexham which pledges to become a centre of excellence for dementia care has opened.

The Bondlondeb unit at the Pendine Park residential centre will provide specialist care for up to 64 people. The centre which has created 100 domiciliary care jobs in the area, has sought the help of a leading dementia expert to help produce a new model of care for residents.

The centre's staff will try providing a new innovative type of care using the arts to help residents. Pendine Park's resident artists will hold one-to-one classes with residents and they will also work alongside Prof Bob Woods from Bangor University and his team, to see how a collaboration of music can be used to enrich the care of dementia sufferers.

Professor Woods who leads the Dementia Services Development Centre told BBC News that the centre will be of major regional importance.

"We're seeing an increase of roughly a third in the number of people with dementia over the next decade, so there is going to be a need for more support and care for people with dementia and their families. I think the relatives of people with dementia in north Wales are going to be delighted to see this place opening."

"It's got lots of space and it's been designed for a wide range of people with dementia and younger people with dementia. It has fantastic potential," he added.

Mario Kreft, the centre's owner was recently awarded an MBE for his services to social care, he dedicated the development to his grandmother who developed Alzheimer's in her later life.

"Our vision is to provide a world class community based resource for people with various forms of dementia," he said.
