Plans to build a multi-million pound specialist care home in Peterborough will create many new social care jobs in the area.

Commissioned by PJ Care, a major UK employer of domiciliary care jobs and other care and therapy workers, once finished, the 107 bed home will create up to 180 permanent opportunities in the area. These will range from physiotherapy jobs to more straightforward domiciliary care, as the centre will be just one of three in the country to offer a full range of care services for individuals with illnesses and disabilities.

The £12 million pound development will consist of four independent structures which will offer dedicated services, as well as a general therapy centre that will include a hydrotherapy pool, a coffee shop and a physiotherapy gym. The plans also include a proposed training centre, which will teach people the skills needed for both social care jobs and domestic care.

"It's an exciting project," said Neil Russell, operations manager of PJ Care. "Peterborough's a booming city and it's got a lot of potential for us as a care provider. We looked all over the country before deciding on the city, which came out on top of places like Manchester and Bristol."

Speaking to local newspaper Peterborough Today, Russell said that the group hoped to get the plans submitted by June this year and had a target opening date of Easter 2012.
