More social care jobs to be offered thanks to Queen's speech

19 November 2009

The Queen's speech set the tone for the government's election campaign, and promised better social care. It was promised that, along with the abolishment of child poverty, new entitlements for youngsters at school and the elderly needing care, will get the social care they need by qualified social workers.

These acts will all be carried out in conjunction with the NHS new rights. Offering new rights to free care and good teaching are on the cards, but there is always the implication for legal aid, council housing and other social care services which could be costly for the government.

The speech stated: "By the active creation of jobs, restructuring the financial sector, strengthening the national infrastructure and providing responsible investment, my government will foster growth and employment."

The personal care at home bill will be implemented at a cost of £670 million a year, with officials estimating that 400,000 people will benefit from the measures. The bill is intended to allow disabled and elderly people to remain in their own homes instead of going into residential homes, while providing new national care services as promised by the Prime Minister.

It has been promised that a guarantee of free personal home care for up to 280,000 people with the greatest needs, will be implemented, creating more social care jobs. Though to be fair, 166,000 people do already receive free social care.

130,000 people have been told they will benefit from extended measures, such as adaptations to their homes in order for them to live independently for as long as possible in their own homes.
