More bilingual Welsh nurses to be trained

11 August 2011 - Paul Smithson

A new scheme seeks to promote understanding of the Welsh language in the nursing profession in Wales, due to the positive impact it can have on the treatment of patients with disabilities.

WalesOnline reported how new resources were unveiled at the National Eisteddfod's Maes this month, which will see nurses at at Bangor University receive specialist training in this area.

Responding to the move, Dafydd Trystan from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol told the news provider: "Independent evidence shows that the ability to practise professionally bilingually has a positive effect on the patient, it is therefore very important that nursing students' opportunities to study in Welsh are expanded."

Mr Trystan's organisation is the national institution for the development of Welsh medium education and it has given its backing and financial support to the strategy.

Professionals in nurse manager jobs can expect all students graduating from Bangor University to have a basic understanding of handling patients with disabilities, with resources available to provide pupils with the ability to communicate in Welsh.

Devolution in 1999 gave the Welsh Assembly, Scottish Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly significant powers over their delivery of health services.

Chief nursing officer for Scotland Ros Moore recently told the Nursing Times that it has allowed each nation to concentrate on their individual priorities and needs.
