Massive increase in people straining using Wii or mobiles

11 January 2011 - Laura Nineham

People in physiotherapy jobs have seen a massive increase in the number of patients suffering from strain injuries caused by over-using devices.

The British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) said their London clinic had a 72 per cent increase in the number of patients who had strained muscles when using mobile phones or the Wii games console, for example.

The BCOM wouldn't reveal an exact figure, because of confidentiality rules, but said the number of patients treated in the London clinic in the past week was greater than before Christmas.

"The Christmas period is the obvious time, particularly this year's longer-than-usual break, when people spend more time entertaining themselves," explained head of the clinic and osteopathy at the BCOM, Manoj Mehta.

Neck ache and headaches can be caused by prolonged periods on mobiles, especially if people are engrossed in playing apps. Furthermore, people assume they don't need to warm up when playing on the Wii, which has caused many strains.

In fact, gentle stretching exercises could help prevent such injuries, Mr Mehta said, but avoiding long periods of use is also important.

"Do not ignore the warning signs - the twinges that occur whilst you're playing these games serve as a warning," explained Mr Mehta, adding that a person should seek professional help if they experience such pain.
