Statistics have shown that the obesity problem in Kent is growing, with just under a third of its adult residents being overweight.

According to YourSwale.co.uk, this puts Kent way above the national average obesity level, which stands at 23 per cent. The areas of Swale and Medway are home to the worse culprits; with 30 per cent of their community found to be overweight or obese.

The latter is diagnosed when a person has a Body Mass Index (BMI) or over 30 and if they weigh approximately 20 per cent more than they should.

The shocking news may help convince residents within the county to contact those in dietitian jobs to help them get back on track - particularly as it isn't just their physical health that suffers as a result of obesity, but their mental health, too.

That's according to Jonathan Sexton, Canterbury and Swale's assistant direct of public health. He told Kentnews.co.uk: "High levels of obesity are...linked to a person's emotional wellbeing and mental health.

However he did admit lowering obesity rates can be challenging as often, for families, their bad habits have "become a way of life."

As such, the local NHS trust is trying hard to help its residents get healthy; with schemes being created specifically for children and families. It is hoped by encouraging children to live a healthier life, their entire family will follow suit.
