Jamie Oliver makes direct appeal to UN

20 September 2011 - Deborah Bates

Jamie Oliver has taken his healthy eating crusade to a higher level by appealing directly to the United Nations (UN) secretary general.

Writing to Ban Ki-Moon, the celebrity chef asked the UN to take action on educating children and families about food. Otherwise, the entire world could soon be existing on fast food, he believes.

His comments come shortly after launching television shows like 'Jamie's Food Revolution' and 'Jamie's School Dinners', which were aimed at educating the world on the benefits of healthy eating. They have also highlighted some worrying statistics, like that one in ten people in the world are obese.

Furthermore, Oliver has previously confirmed that each few minutes, over 25 people across the globe die from obesity-related causes, according to Huffingtonpost.com.

Although his previous efforts may well have gained praise from professionals in dietitian jobs, they will surely be even happier to hear Oliver is continuing to target the people who matter with his pleas.

The man himself took to the press to explain why he is targeting the UN now, stating: "I have seen young mothers feeding toddlers cola through a feeding bottle because they don't understand good nutrition."

He also revealed on Webmd.com: "I've shown simple fresh vegetables to teenage students in the United Kingdom and America and they can't identify a cucumber or an aubergine or a pear. If parents can't cook, how can they feed themselves and their growing families?"
