Restaurants across Ireland are joining the fight against obesity within children by downsizing the portion sizes they offer, those in dietitian jobs might be happy to hear.

According to 121doc.co.uk, a joint venture between the Nutrition & Health Foundation and the Restaurants Association of Ireland will see portions made smaller, promoting a healthier lifestyle for children.

The venture, named 'Kids Size Me', is a move designed to manage the risk of increasing numbers of children developing type-2 diabetes. As one in every four Irish child is either obese or at best, overweight, the initiative couldn't have come at a better time.

One restaurateur from Dublin, Brian Fallon, gave his public support from the scheme. He told Irishtimes.com: "It is clear that the demand is out there and it is now time for restaurants to act on that demand.

"It is about a mindset and about changing attitudes," he added, stating that is restaurant would update its portions and menu immediately in support of the venture.

Furthermore, nutrition expert Dr Muireann Cullen said the venture was ideal because it's "essential to ensure children have access to healthier food options in the appropriate serving size."

She too called up on restaurants to take part in the venture and work with each other to actively promote the smaller portion sizes.
