Injured soldiers enjoy occupational therapy garden

03 June 2011 - Deborah Bates

Many soldiers who have been injured whilst fighting on the front line have been recovering at a special occupational therapy garden in Headly Court, Surrey.

According to TreeHugger, the troops' recovery will significantly benefit from the garden as it will allow them to recover from "poly-trauma", which is when a person has obtained numerous highly traumatic injuries.

To achieve this, soldiers are tasked with small but effective tasks around the garden and its adjacent allotment. The Maidenhead Advertiser claimed that these tasks will force the wounded soldiers to "work at different heights, stand on varying slopes" and move varying objects around.

The soldiers who have already benefited from the venture were quick to speak out, and their comments may interest professionals working in occupational therapy jobs.

One such soldier was Captain Andrew Jelinek, from Combermere Barracks. He told the press how the garden had helped him get back to health after sustaining damage to his spinal cord, and a break in his pelvis.

Jelinek revealed: "For me, this project will help me regain strength and mobility in my back and legs, and will also test my balance and endurance."

"I find the outdoors a very relaxing and fulfilling place to be, so the time passes quickly and I feel better for it."

Furthermore, a medical expert working at the centre, physiotherapist Major Peter le Feuvre, confirmed how exactly the garden helps. He said the garden provided the "roots" for patients to rehabilitate slowly, which would really aid their recovery.
