Improved nutrition helping reduce pressure ulcers

23 May 2011 - Deborah Bates

Improving the nutrition and skincare of hospital patients has helped reduce their chance of developing pressure ulcers.

That's according to Wales Online, which revealed that hospitals across West Wales had focused on these and other aspects of each patient's wellbeing in order to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers - otherwise known as bedsores, NHS.uk confirmed.

It revealed that the hospitals looked at "four key areas to improve patient care - the surface of the skin, keeping the patient moving, incontinence and nutrition."

"Patients are regularly assessed for their risk of developing a pressure ulcer and their results clearly recorded on a chart by their bed," it added. "Many wards have gone more than 100 days without a single pressure ulcer developing in hospital."

The news may be of particular interest to those in nutrition jobs, given the link between diet and the ulcers. Furthermore, professionals working in nurse manager jobs across the nation may also want to try these methods on their own patients, following in the Welsh hospitals' successful footsteps.

A representative for the Welsh health board, Judith Bowen, spoke out to confirm the news.

She claimed: "Staff have always been concerned about pressure ulcers, but now, if a patient does develop one, they are totally determined to understand why it has happened, and put plans and actions in place to prevent further pressure ulcers developing."

"We have many wards going months without a single incident and as a result, patients are recovering better and returning home sooner."
