Hull City Council plans indicate new extra care strategy

24 August 2010 - William Hobson

Three new and extensive extra care facilities under development in Hull indicate a new strategy for independent living and care by the council.

Currently, Hull has only one existing extra care development. However recently the Yorkshire Post reported that several disused sites are to be massively redeveloped into extensive extra care accommodation, creating housing for hundreds of elderly people and those with disabilities.

One of these sites is in the area formerly occupied by the Homethorpe tower blocks, which is to be turned into a four-storey building of 60 two-bedroom flats. According to the post, a similar building is to be constructed at another site in East Hull, where the existing day centre has fallen into disrepair following flood damage in 2007.

Alongside a third development of 100 sheltered accommodation flats at another site in Hawthorn Avenue, the new approach will dramatically expand the demand for workers to fill domiciliary care jobs in the area through the creation of extensive facilities for assisted living. Under the new scheme, the purpose-built housing developments will be for rent on an individual basis with round-the-clock access to care and support from on-site and on-call workers.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, the assistant head of care and housing at Hull Council, Mariette Glover said that the scheme could provide care to most people in need of domestic care. "The only people who won't be able to stay there at the moment are people who need 24 hour nursing care but in the future, as community nursing care develops, we expect those people to be also able to stay in their own home."
