Housing association to create new jobs

23 September 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

Up to 100 new jobs could be created following the collapse of repairs firm Connaught.

The company, which held repair contracts for a number of social landlords, went into administration earlier this month putting 10,000 jobs at risk.

One Vision Housing, a social landlord with more than 11,000 properties in the Sefton area, contracted Connaught to carry out their property maintenance. Since the collapse of the firm, the housing association said residents had raised concerns that their homes could be left in a state of disrepair for months.

In response to the residents fears, One Vision Housing has now created an in-house maintenance service to deal with property repairs. The new service is expected to create as many as 100 new social housing jobs.

Roy Williams One Vision Housing's chief executive told 24 Dash: "By managing our repairs and maintenance service directly in-house, we have opted to move away from the responsive repairs contractor model ensuring a more practical and effective service for our customers."

One Vision Housing is expected to begin the recruiting for positions over the next two weeks and say the decision to create an in house maintenance team allows them to provide essential front line service to their tenants.

Chairman Darren Hardy told icSefton and West Lancs: "We hope that this restructure spells good news for at least some of the dismissed Connaught staff as well as providing opportunities for other local workers. This is an exciting time for the organisation."
