A new competition involving the submission of ideas for new health applications has been launched by health secretary Andrew Lansley, reports Wired.

While existing apps like Choose Well - an app that locates nearby NHS health services - and iBreastCheck - a guide to checking breasts for abnormalities - have already gone down a storm in the digital world, the Health Secretary has invited developers to submit ideas for new apps that could help patients, those in social care jobs and GP's across the country.

According to the Guardian, the NHS will not fund any development for the best apps but rather let third-party developers use their ideas and build the platforms.

A number of high-profile judges will scruntinise the ideas including Dr Shaibal Roy, an investigator from the National Institute for Health Research; Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director; Dragon's Den judge Julie Meyer and Jennie Ritchie-Campbell, Director of Cancer Services Innovation at Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mr Lansley elaborates on the competition: "We want to give people better access to information that will put them in control of their health and help make informed choices about their healthcare.

"This is a unique opportunity for the NHS and those who develop apps to not only showcase their work but bring to life new ideas and realise true innovation in healthcare," he added.
